Centennial Celebration

For 100 years, Alamo Heights United Methodist Church has provided spiritual nurture for the children, youth, and adults of our community. To celebrate this milestone in our faith journey as a congregation, a year-long celebration is being planned.

Why are we having a year-long celebration? In 1909, there were only bluebonnets and jackrabbits in Alamo Heights. Our AHUMCHistory Book tells us, "The Methodist Board of Church Extension paid $1,500 for the lot at 5101 Broadway on September 28, 1909, with the intention of someday erecting a church there." At a request from the Delery, Cocke, and Carter families, ranchers in the area whose children were attending Sunday School at Travis Park Methodist Church, a tent was soon erected to offer worship and Sunday School in Alamo Heights. Rev. T.F. Sessions served as the first pastor. Alamo Heights Methodist Church was born that fall of 1909, but it wouldn't be until July of 1910 that construction started on a permanent structure for the church.

From those 3 families and humble tent beginnings, we have grown to be the 5772-member church we are today on Basse Road, serving our community and our world to the glory of God through Jesus Christ our Lord and the power of the Holy Spirit!

So for the next year, we will celebrate our rich heritage and set our eyes on a new future that God is preparing for us. There will be a variety of events, activities, commemorations, and reflections to help us remember and celebrate. Watch for more detailed information about the year ahead. Our desire is that many of you will be involved in a variety of ways in making this Centennial Celebration a success. Your Centennial Committee welcomes your input, your ideas, and your assistance. Feel free to call the church (826-3215) for committee contact information.

You are invited to join us for an exciting Centennial year with activities and events for all ages, and opportunities for all to celebrate whether you've been a member many years or have just joined our church family. With joy and peace, we will reflect on treasured memories of our rich heritage as a faith community, but we will also look forward into the future God has prepared for us to become an even more vibrant, dynamic church for the future.
